York Township Historical SocietyThe present York Township Historical Society was formed in 1992. Our purpose is to provide an organization to promote, maintain and preserve material of historical interest and provide a central location where books, records, photographs, maps, artifacts, and other memorabilia of York Township may be collected, displayed, and preserved. That dream of a central location became reality on August 23, 1998. A $20,000 grant from the Letha E. House Foundation, private donations of material and labor, and an additional $6,000 from the society were combined to begin the process of dismantling and moving the old school to its present location and condition. The 24 ft.-by-32 ft. schoolhouse has been completely restored, inside and out. It presently holds 18 cast-iron desks with fold-down seats, a teacher's desk, blackboards, an aged pot-bellied stove, numerous old books, displays, and items from York Township's history. Also located on the property is an antique road grader donated by Frank Ehrman of Branch Road and a 110 year-old granary donated to the society by John and Beth Bartter. The granary was originally located at their farm on Wolff Road. The two-story farm building held various types of grain, most of which was used for livestock. Displays and antique farm tools can now be found inside. The York Township Historical Society meets the second Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the one-room schoolhouse on Spellman Street in Mallet Creek, Ohio. Membership is open to everyone. Dues for individuals are $5 per year or $50 for a lifetime membership. Click on photo to see larger version.
